OVERSEAS SELF-WINDING HIGH JEWELLERY

Vacheron Constantin opens a new chapter for the Overseas self-winding 35 mm model, introducing two high-jewellery versions for the first time, in 18K white gold and in 18K 5N pink gold, powered by the Manufacture movement, calibre 1088/1. Originally created in 2023, the 35 mm Overseas case was conceived as a timepiece to suit all discerning wrists in any situation. Its more streamlined dimensions make it intrinsically comfortable to wear, while retaining all of the aesthetic codes and inherent functionality of its larger Overseas counterparts.

The dazzling craft of gem-setting

Vacheron Constantin has been on a quest for excellence in the art of gem-setting since the 19th century, when it added the craft to its repertoire of métiers d’art. At that time, timepieces were not only confined to a waistcoat pocket but were also worn as jewellery and fashion accessories. The new Overseas Self-Winding 35 mm High Jewellery watch is adorned with a total of 1,430 diamonds (~12.58 cts) and combines two cuts: brilliant and baguette.

The Maltese cross motif on the bezel – a signature of the Overseas collection, inspired by Vacheron Constantin’s emblem – is highlighted by the radiance of 60 invisibly set baguette-cut diamonds (~ 2.28 cts). Invisible setting is particularly challenging for the gem-setter as it creates a seamlessly gem-covered surface on which the stones appear to float above the gold surface with no visible means of support. First, the gem-setter creates a framework of gold rails, only 0.2 mm to 0.4 mm thick, which forms a secure grid structure that remains hidden once the gemstones are slotted into it. After creating the frame, the artisan must cut a tiny V-shaped groove along both sides of each diamond, to match the position and dimensions of the rails with a tolerance of only 0.02 millimetres, thus ensuring that the stones sit flush, with no gaps, overlaps or visible metal. This setting technique is so meticulous that it can take several hours for just one stone.

Even at home, Technogym’s equipment and digital solutions are at your side as strength training makes a powerful comeback in the wellness scene. In addition to aesthetics, strength training helps with longevity and improves quality of life over the years.

After strength training’s golden age in the 80s, in recent years its trend is living a huge comeback. Alongside strength training as powerlifting and bodybuilding to boost muscle mass, there are other facets to it. In fact, besides the evergreen aesthetic reasons linked to muscle definition and appearance, the causes of this return are to be traced to physical well-being and a better quality of life. From a medical point of view, strength training boosts bone density, muscle endurance and texture, it improves metabolism, general posture, ligaments, tendons and joints condition, cardiovascular and nervous health, it helps balance body composition (lean mass/fat mass/muscle mass).

Strength training – or resistance training – is that macro-category of anaerobic exercise which implies muscle activity to oppose an external load. The basic mechanism at the core of strength training involves using muscle strength to fight back a resistance: barbell weights, dumbbells, kettlebells, or any gym equipment specific for certain muscle groups. With consistency, the end result is a bigger and stronger muscle which adapted to the strain.

It goes without saying that working on strength is particularly important for athletes, as it greatly reduces the risk of injury and allows them to reach the ultimate peak of speed and athleticism. Strength training boosts all kinds of performance, even those not strictly related to endurance, making you faster and more athletic, and it also makes a great contribution in post-injury recovery and physical reconditioning.

Strength training has transcended the realm of elite sportspeople, making its mark in ‘everyday’ gym workouts through the current widespread adoption by the general public of High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and functional training. This evolution represents a democratization of strength-focused workouts, as individuals of all fitness levels embrace their transformative benefits, once reserved for professional athletes.

The latest scientific studies also highlight the importance of strength training for weight loss. If until a while ago it was believed that people wanting to get leaner had to go for hours of cardiovascular sessions, the modern fitness and medical scenario says that incorporating resistance training in the weight-loss process is fundamental. This kind of training is a great protector of lean muscle mass and a powerful stimulus for its growth, and it counteracts fat mass. This happens both through actual exercise session and through after-burn (calories that the body continues to burn after exercising).

It’s no surprise that training the body’s strength is also fundamental for the senior demographic (>70), as it’s the most effective way to fight the age-specific and natural tendency to physical weakness, linked to muscle mass loss. Adding moderate/mild strength training sessions – prescribed by a doctor and guided by a trainer – to older people’s routines essentially decreases the likelihood of injury and makes it possible for them to live an active life, longer.
