The Media Majlis Museum at Northwestern University in Qatar celebrates the success of its 10th exhibition, “Memememememe,” after three months of dynamic engagement, which invited thousands of visitors to explore the cultural, social, and political significance of internet memes. The exhibition, which opened on September 1st, 2025, marked the Museum’s fifth anniversary and reaffirmed its role as a hub for critical conversations at the intersection of media, technology, and culture.

Throughout its run, the exhibition drew an enthusiastic and diverse audience of students, scholars, artists, and media professionals. Visitors interacted with artworks, ranging from digital installations to immersive environments, that unpacked the viral nature of online communication and its influence on collective identity.

Curated by Jack Thomas Taylor, curator of art, media, and technology at the Museum, and assistant curator Amal Zeyad Ali, the exhibition examined memes as cultural barometers through four conceptual measures: mass, length, time, and volume. This structure invited audiences to consider how memes spread and redefine our digital realities.

“Every visit to the Media Majlis Museum reminds me how powerfully it advances our academic mission,” said Marwan M. Kraidy, dean and CEO of Northwestern Qatar. “Memememememe turned a familiar part of digital life into a catalyst for real inquiry, prompting visitors to question, analyze, and see culture differently. That kind of engagement is the heart of academic excellence at Northwestern Qatar, and the Museum continues to be an inspiring space for community engagement and dialogue".

The exhibition brings together a dynamic selection of artworks, including highlights such as The Roomba Cat by Franco and Eva Mattes, a sculpture featuring a cat perched atop a functioning robot vacuum cleaner that roams freely throughout the gallery, infusing the space with an unexpected sense of movement and play. Also on view are the armatures of memes by Seohyo, as well as Curved Screen by Orkhan Mammadov.

The scenography, designed by Shepherd Studio, continued to captivate visitors with a space of endless circulation mirroring the ceaseless churn of digital content. Audience favorites included interactive works such as Andreas Refsgaard’s AI photobooth and Adnan Aga’s Narrative Laundry, both of which encouraged playful yet critical reflection on meme-making and online behavior. Showcasing the work of established and emerging artists based in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and beyond, the exhibition reflected on the fragility of meaning in the digital age.

The exhibition also featured seven newly commissioned works by artists Alia Leonardi, Anne Horel, Cem A., Eman Makki, Mauro C. Martinez, Orkhan Mammadov, and Seo Hyojung, whose pieces examined digital memory, identity, and collective emotion in the age of connectivity.

As the Museum concludes this milestone exhibition, Alfredo Cramerotti, director of Media Majlis Museum, remarked: “With Memememememe exhibition, we took a seemingly lighthearted subject and turned it into an opportunity for deep cultural reflection. The exhibition proved that memes are, in fact, powerful cultural tools that connect generations and challenge conventions.”

Featuring 23 artworks by 12 artists spanning 11 countries, the exhibition became a meeting point for voices from across the globe. The exhibition blended new commissions and existing works, celebrating the diversity of artistic approaches to humor, identity, and communication in the age of connectivity. With the exhibition now concluded, the Museum reinforces its standing as a regional leader in exploring the intersections of media, culture, and technology. The Museum’s upcoming 2026 programming will continue to expand this conversation, offering new ways to experience and interrogate the stories that shape contemporary life.

As the first university museum dedicated to exploring journalism, communication, and media in the Arab world, the Media Majlis Museum continues to create immersive experiences that challenge conventional narratives.

Association of Arab Universities Names His Excellency Dr. Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al-Kawari, Minister of State and President of Qatar National Library, as 2025 Personality of the Year for Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development

The Second Forum for the Arab World's International Day for Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development has named His Excellency Dr. Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al-Kawari, Minister of State and President of Qatar National Library, as the 2025 Personality of the Year for Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development. The forum, organized by the Department of Sustainable Development and International Cooperation of the General Secretariat of the Arab League, was held at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo on 4 December 2025, under the patronage of the Association of Arab Universities.

The selection of HE Minister Al-Kawari as Personality of the Year reflects the Association’s recognition of Qatar's pioneering role in education, culture, and creative development, and underscores Qatar National Library's distinguished efforts as a beacon of human creativity and cultural enlightenment.

Dr. Al-Kawari received a formal invitation to attend the forum from Professor Amr Ezzat Salama, Secretary-General of the Association of Arab Universities and Honorary President of the Arab Council for Social Responsibility, who expressed the forum's appreciation for Qatar's role in supporting education, culture, and the advancement of the Arab region.

On this occasion, HE Dr. Al-Kawari expressed his gratitude for the honor, stating: "I am proud to be named the 2025 Personality of the Year for Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development. This is a tribute to every Arab intellectual and educator who has planted a seed of knowledge or a seedling of culture in our good Arab land. It is not recognition of me personally as much as it is recognition of the 'cultural diplomacy' message that Qatar believes in, and it honors the role that Qatar National Library plays in building bridges of knowledge between our nation's heritage and its present, linking its past with its future."

Speaking on the importance of knowledge and fostering innovation, HE added: "In Qatar, we share with our Arab brothers the same vision that knowledge is the first pillar of responsibility, and that making knowledge accessible and encouraging innovation are the shortest paths to achieving true sustainable development. Our greatest responsibility toward our societies lies in combating ignorance, preserving Arab memory from being lost, and making science accessible to every seeker of truth. This represents social responsibility in its highest sense—equipping the Arab mind with the tools that enable it to face the challenges of the age."

HE emphasized that this honor recognizes "an idea that Qatar, leadership and people, has believed in: that culture is not a luxury but a responsibility, that knowledge is not an option but a duty, and that youth are not only the future but the present that we must empower today."

HE outlined the main pillars of Qatar National Library's social responsibility and Sustainable Development, which include: democratizing knowledge through the Qatar Digital Library project and other resources; building a reading and informed society through the "Qatar Reads" and its "One Book, One Doha" campaign; preserving heritage and historical memory; comprehensive accessibility and empowering everyone through the Sensory Room, assistive technologies, and the "Manara" open science platform; and cultural diplomacy and building bridges for international dialogue through partnerships with leading global institutions.

HE dedicated this honor "to our Arab youth, to the talents in whom we see the making of the future, to the minds that need only an opportunity to create, and to the hearts that carry the dreams of their homelands," emphasizing that "the real investment is not in buildings, but in people—in their values, knowledge, and will."

This event is part of the Arab League's efforts to achieve sustainable development goals and strengthen joint efforts that contribute to the advancement of Arab societies, while providing necessary support to broad segments, particularly youth, women, and various Arab universities.

Hourglass Partners with Globally Renowned Tattoo Artist Sasha Unisex to

Transcend Beauty Through This Year’s Holiday Palettes.

Vegan and cruelty-free luxury beauty brand Hourglass Cosmetics unveils this season’s iconic Ambient Lighting Edit Unlocked palettes, featuring four new thoughtfully curated designs with vibrant, unparalleled scenes of flora and fauna celebrating the beauty, spirit, and symbolism of animals in the natural world.

A COLORFUL INSPIRATION

The collaboration reflects the Hourglass commitment to animal welfare, spotlighting four regal animals: Deer, Swan, Fox, and Horse hand-painted by renowned Ukrainian tattoo artist Sasha Unisex. Known for her use of bold, geometric watercolors that fuse imagination and reality in her body art, these palettes embody makeup as a medium for artistry.

Ethereal depictions of nature – creatures that ignite your imagination, wild floral caught mid-bloom, and the quiet tension of geometry melting into fluid watercolor. From a swan suspended in a moment of stillness, to petals bleeding into negative space, to fractals unfolding like living origami. In a world where beauty is often fleeting, The Living Canvas dares to make it eternal.

“When working on this project, I wanted the packaging to be more than just beautiful. I imagined how it would feel to open the palette for the first time, and I wanted that moment to feel special,” said Sasha Unisex. “With tattoos, you think about longevity - how the image moves with the body. Makeup, like tattoos, is a creative tool. I love how it can transform and highlight personality. It’s another kind of art.”

ARTISTRY MEETS INNOVATION

In addition to bestselling shades, this year’s palettes feature several brand-new shades and include at least one blush or bronzer created using the Hourglass signature miscelare marbling technique.

Six Unique Combinations of Highlighter, Blush, and Bronzer for a Lit-from-Within Glow

• Deer (Three new shades). Cool tones of ivory and bronze with warm peach and pink hues, all infused with fine pearl for a soft glow.

• Swan (Four new shades). A palette bursting with peach, bold coral pink, and plum-berry balanced by golden shimmer and matte bronze for a multi-dimensional glow.

• Fox (Five new shades). Warm coral, terracotta, and rich berry tones mingle with matte bronze and shimmering golden hues to exude a lit-from-within glow.

• Horse. Plum, peony, and warm rose tones, enhanced with shimmery champagne and golden bronze to create an endless glow.

These palettes can also be beautifully paired with the new limited-edition double-ended brush with complementary artwork. Designed to pair with the palettes, each brush has a slanted end for blush and a tapered end for highlighter.

This festive season, customization is available only on HourglassCosmetics.com, where clients can build their own palette by matching their preferred design with their chosen color palette.

Each Unlocked palette represents a gift that gives back, with 5% of net profits supporting the Nonhuman Rights Project in its effort to secure fundamental rights for animals.
