When Alfa Romeo unveiled their first SUV in over a century at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show, it rapidly became one of the best SUVs in its medium-sized premium segment.
Named after Italy's highest mountain pass—over 20 kilometers long and with over 75 hairpin turns—the Alfa Romeo Stelvio received significant updates for the 2022 model year. These include a few more standard convenience features and driver assistance systems, along with introducing two new trims—the Veloce and Veloce TI.
In Qatar, the new Alfa Romeo Stelvio won the 2021 “Qatar Car of the Year” (QCOTY)—one of Qatar's most prestigious automotive awards, organized by Maqina Middle East Magazine in cooperation with Mawater Center—for the “Best Compact Luxury SUV.”
“This award is a recognition of Alfa Romeo’s ability to deliver innovative design language, capable engines, and luxurious amenities,” said Charly Dagher, General Manager of Alfa Romeo Qatar, commenting on receiving the 2021 QCOTY award.
The Stelvio Super, Veloce, Veloce TI, and the high-performance Stelvio Quadrifoglio are all available in Qatar through Alfardan Sports Motors—the authorized reseller of Alfa Romeo in the country. Alfardan Sports Motors offers an industry-leading five-year or 120,000 km (whichever comes first) warranty and service package on all Alfa Romeo models.
Fresh styling and a Dark package!
Visually, the 2022 Stelvio Super, Veloce, Veloce TI, and the top-of-the-line Stelvio Quadrifoglio are all share some exterior elements. These include the iconic Alfa Romeo triangle grille, stylish bi-xenon headlights, LED DRLs and taillights, elevated ground clearance, and dual-quad exhaust pipes.
While the entry-level Stelvio Super gets 19-inch alloy wheels, the Veloce and Veloce TI variants feature 20-inch alloy wheels to complete the sporty look of these two variants. The range-topping Stelvio Quadrifoglio gets a choice of 20-inch or 21-inch alloy wheels—with the latter available in clear coat or burnished finish.
A new Dark appearance package is also available for the Stelvio Veloce TI and includes a black glossy “Scudetto” grille, DLO, roof bars, exterior mirror caps, and exhaust tips.
Dimensionally speaking, the new 2022 Alfa Romeo Stelvio has an overall length of 4687 mm and measures 1903 mm and 1693 mm in width and height, respectively. Alfa Romeo's first SUV also has a generous wheelbase of 2818 mm. These dimensions are more than enough to support five seats.
Luxurious interior with sporty touches
Inside the 2022 Alfa Romeo Stelvio, you'll find a lot of features you rarely see as standard. The build quality is second to none. This luxury SUV has premium leather upholstery and matching stitches, along with aluminum accents and wood surfaces in walnut or oak.
There is an 8.8-inch touchscreen placed at the center of the dashboard with 3D navigation capabilities, and a 7-inch color TFT instrument cluster. Like on the Giulia, there is a standard heated leather steering wheel, while the aluminum column-mounted paddle shifters come standard only with the Veloce TI and Quadrifoglio grades. The customers of the Super and Veloce variants have the option of adding the latter feature as an upgrade.
As far as standard equipment goes, the entry-level Stelvio Super trim level gets leather seats available in black, red, or chocolate color, power-folding exterior mirrors, aluminum door sills, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, remote start, auto-dimming rearview mirror, an 8-speaker sound system, and electric-powered front seats with memory function.
Clients that go with the Veloce variant get a black headliner, a 14-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, a panoramic sunroof, 6-way power sporty seats, and a hands-free tailgate. The Veloce TI trim level adds sporty leather or Alcantara seats, 8-way electric-powered front seats, front and rear parking sensors, an air quality system, privacy glass for the rear windows, and real carbon-fiber inserts.
The top-of-the-line Stelvio Quadrifoglio adds interior ambient lighting, a Quadrifoglio steering wheel, rain and dusk sensors, aluminum door sill scuff plates, and aluminum sport pedals, among other luxurious amenities.
On the safety front, the 2022 Alfa Romeo Stelvio gains an assortment of driver-assistance systems, including the Autonomous Emergency Brake (AEB), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Integrated Brake System (IBS), and Hill Descent Control (HDC) as standard. Key optional safety features include Active Cruise Control (ACC), and Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) with Rear Cross-Path Detection, to name a few.
Four and six-cylinder engines
The 2022 Alfa Romeo Stelvio is available with two engine options: four and six-cylinder mills. The Super, Veloce, and Veloce TI models come fitted with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 280 hp and 400 Nm of torque. Hooked to an eight-speed automatic transmission sending power to the Q4 all-wheel-drive system, the four-cylinder unit enables the luxury SUV to go from zero to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds before hitting a top speed of 230 km/h.
If performance is your primary concern, you can opt for the range-topping Stelvio Quadrifoglio model powered by a V6, bi-turbo 2.9-liter engine. The potent V6 engine delivers 510 hp and 600 Nm of torque, allowing the mid-size SUV to go from zero to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds, before maxing out at 283 km/h. The sportier variant also links to an eight-speed automatic transmission with aluminum paddle shifters, sending power to the Q4 all-wheel-drive system.
