Nespresso today launches CAFECITO de CUBA, an intense roasted coffee, and the first Cuban blend under the Reviving Origins program, which aims to restore coffee production in challenged coffee regions. CAFECITO de CUBA is sourced from the Eastern part of the island, where coffee production has declined in recent decades due to economic and political instability.
The Reviving Origins program is Nespresso’s long-term approach to revitalizing coffee agriculture and local coffee economies through supporting sustainable production in regions impacted by adversities such as conflict, economic hardship and environmental disasters. Since its launch in 2019, the Reviving Origins program has made some of the world’s finest and most exclusive coffees from areas of Zimbabwe, Uganda, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, available as seasonal blends to Nespresso coffee drinkers.
Nespresso is contributing to the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) strategy in Cuba, participating in the Mascafé3 Program for a 3-year project’s implementation (2020-2022). The Mascafé3 Program was launched to improve coffee producers’ livelihoods in rural mountain communities, reducing their socio-economic and cultural vulnerability, while strengthening coffee production and sustainability. In addition, many actions are focused on supporting women's empowerment and involving young people in the coffee value chain.
Nespresso’s contribution is being used to support the work of the Mascafé3 Program, which includes capacity building for Cuban individual farmers, cooperatives and other supply chain participants; supporting plant production and providing nurseries to produce quality coffee; and improving access to equipment that will improve coffee quality and productivity on farms. Through Nespresso’s support, the Mascafe'3 Program is expanding its scope by 30%, to improve the livelihoods of more than 10,000 Cuban smallholder farmers.
Yassir Corpataux, Coffee Ambassador Nespresso Middle East & Africa said “Through our Reviving Origins program, we are committed to helping Cuban coffee farmers to revitalize their industries, fostering crucial economic development that will enhance the welfare of these communities for years to come.”
Nespresso’s unique sustainable sourcing model in coffee producing countries, the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program, provides the foundation for its work in Reviving Origins regions and involves more than 110,000 farmers across the world. Overall, Nespresso is investing a total of CHF 10 million in the Reviving Origins program over a period of five years (2019-2023).
CAFECITO de CUBA is available online and at Nespresso boutiques from July 14th, alongside other Reviving Origins coffees, KAHAWA ya CONGO, AMAHA awe UGANDA, TAMUKA mu ZIMBABWE and ESPERANZA de COLOMBIA.
