A Guide to the FARFETCH Second Life Service

Shopping sustainably has become much easier, thanks to the launch of the Second Life service here on FARFETCH. Second Life enables you to earn credit, free up space in your closet and help prolong the life of your accessories.

Here at FARFETCH, we want to ensure we are working towards a circular fashion economy, helping to close the loop on waste. We're on a mission to become the global platform for good luxury fashion — empowering everyone to think, act and choose positively.

But what do you have to do to start shopping, selling, and earning more positively?

Our service allows you to clear space and sell your second-hand designer handbags, in exchange for some well-earned FARFETCH credit. The process is simple and hassle- free, with quick submissions, free pick-ups and fast, upfront payments.

‘I think that FARFETCH Second Life is an amazing service, I know a lot of people who buy seasonal pieces with high prices that they no longer use. The credit [you receive] from trading your bags in, for something newer, is always nice.' - Nirvana Abdul @nirvana.abdul

How FARFETCH Second Life Works

When you find the piece, you’re wanting to sell, simply upload photos and the experts here at FARFETCH will let you know how much credit you could earn — plus you could start seeing the positives in two working days.

Once you’ve made your decision, you can schedule a pick-up time that suits you and we will take care of the rest — once the experts have verified your bag, you will receive the credit in your FARFETCH account in around ten working days. You can spend your credit on both the app and online on the new season’s most sought-after pieces.

We spoke to influencers about how Second Life will impact their shopping habits, asked them for their tips when investing in bags, and asked them about the pieces they are looking to purchase next.

As you might know, here at FARFETCH we are launching our Second Life service. With this, you'll be able to trade in your bag for FARFETCH credit. How do you feel about this possibility?

I was amazed when I saw this service on the FARFETCH app. My main issue with selling my older bags was not receiving the money on time — sometimes it took ages. But when I saw that with FARFETCH’s Second Life service you can get a quotation after two to three days and then get credit, I thought that this was the best way to sell my bags. You’re able to make space in your wardrobe by recycling your older bags and you’re saving the environment too!

Selling your bags and making a profit is the perfect way to buy something new that you’ve been wanting for a while, especially since FARFETCH has a huge variety of options. It’s super convenient and you can also use the credit to buy gifts too.

When you are looking for a new bag, what do you consider?

When I’m looking for a new bag, I tend to follow trends, as I have so many bags and regularly get gifted bags. I always look at classics or limited editions — I love buying second-hand bags that look as though they have a story behind them.

What are your current favorite bags (what styles are you into e.g. mini, everyday bags, totes..etc.)?

I love mini-bags and I always have my eye on metallics. Currently, I am shopping a lot with Jacquemus, I love the shapes and colors of their bags.

I think the idea of trading in previously loved items that no longer serve you, for something newer and fresher is quite a sensible and sustainable approach to consuming. Working in the [fashion] industry, we tend to hoard and hold onto things for months or years, without giving them the chance to be worn. With FARFETCH’s new approach via Second Life, you can continue to replenish your wardrobe, without breaking the bank.

When you are looking for a new bag, what do you consider?

When it comes to purchases now, I’m looking for long-lasting items. I want to buy items now, which will be a very sound investment for the future. Ever since I became a mother, I no longer crave those ‘trend’ pieces but would prefer to have fewer (but heavyweight) items in my closet. I bought a Hermès Kelly 28 Sellier this year and I am so glad I did, it’s a timeless piece that will hold value, if not increase.

What are your current favorite bags (what styles are you into e.g. mini, everyday bags, totes..etc.)?

I’m hoping that my next bag will be a Hermès Birkin 30, it’s really all I need in my wardrobe. While I have been extremely loyal to other brands, Hermès is where I want to invest my money for the foreseeable future.

I think that FARFETCH Second Life is an amazing service, I know a lot of people who buy seasonal pieces with high prices that they no longer use. People who work in fashion tend to need something ‘new’, the credit [you receive] from trading your bags in, for something newer, is always nice.

When you are looking for a new bag, what do you consider?

I consider colors that will complement the pieces that I already have, that way I don’t have to refresh my wardrobe. However, I tend to go for neutral hues and minimal detail, that way they are easy to style. It depends on your personal taste.

What are your current favorite bags (what styles are you into e.g. mini, everyday bags, totes..etc.)?

At the moment, I am very much into mini bags and mid-size, classic bags.
